The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is a doctoral level programme of RGIIM Shillong. The Programme is meant for scholars with curiosity in knowledge related to management studies. The FPM at IIM Shillong is planned to be globally recognized, and would be a premier source of rigorous, and inter-disciplinary research in all areas of management. The programme is committed to train individuals who will excel in their respective area as educators and produce high quality research through publication of quality work of international standard..

About FPM Programme 

Vision of Fellowship Programme in Management (FPM) of IIM, Shillong

FPM program of IIM Shillong aims at creating dedicated researchers and scholars who would explore the critical issues in management, identify opportunities for new frameworks and form new insights. The program offers opportunities for carrying out advanced interdisciplinary research in all fields of management education and practice.

Programme Outline

The participant is expected to spend four to five years for FPM program that includes two years of rigorous course work. The coursework aims at providing an understanding of management discipline, building theoretical foundations in the core area, develop basic skills for analyzing managerial problems and instill research interest. The coursework is expected to enable the participant to provide the platform for future research activities. The participant is evaluated through a Comprehensive Examination after the successful completion of course work and the doctoral dissertation period begins after successfully clearing the comprehensive examination. From third year onwards, the doctoral dissertation work provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its disciplines.

Candidates should have:

  • A Masters’ degree or its equivalent in any discipline with minimum 60% aggregate marks for General Candidates, 55% (Engineering students) or 50% (non-engineering students) aggregate marks for SC/ST Candidates or equivalent grade point average.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree with minimum 60% marks for General Candidates. 55% (Engineering students) or 50% (non-engineering students) aggregate marks for SC/ST Candidates or equivalent grade point average.
  • Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination with minimum 60% aggregate marks for General Candidates. 50% aggregate marks for SC/ST Candidates.
  • Any professional qualifications such as CA, ICWA/ICAI and CS with a minimum 55% aggregate marks.

The above qualification should be from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956; or, recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

Candidates who are in the final year of their qualifying programmes that would make them eligible can also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by June 30, 2017 from the Principal/ Head of the Department / Registrar or Director of the University / Institute (issued on or before June 30, 2017) stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practical examinations) in all the subjects required for obtaining the Master's / Bachelor's degree / equivalent qualification. Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the Master's / Bachelor's degree / equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by Principal / Registrar of their college / Institute. The deadline for submission of mark sheet and the Certificate is December 31, 2017. Please note that those candidates who have applied on the basis of their master's degree will have to meet the required marks stipulation, and those who have applied on the basis of their bachelor's degree will have to meet the required marks stipulation. Non-fulfillment of these conditions will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

Test Scores:

Candidates require a valid test score either of GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, JRF (NET) scoreto be considered for admission. Candidates should mandatorily provide the score card as applicable to the test taken.

  • Applicants may take GMAT. Applicants who have taken the test may upload/submit a copy of their official GMAT scores along with the application. Applicants who have not received the official score card from GMAC, should upload/submit the TEST TAKER COPY along with the application, but submit the OFFICIAL SCORE CARD before the interviews.
  • Applicants may also take GRE. Applicants who have taken the test may upload/submit a copy of their GRE scores along with the application. Applicants who have not received the official score card from ETS, should upload/submit the TEST TAKER COPY along with the application, but submit the OFFICIAL SCORE CARD before the interviews.
  • Applicants may take the Common Admission Test (CAT 2016, 2017) and provide their CAT 2016, 2017 registration number in the online application. The CAT 2016, 2017 scores made available to IIM Shillong will be used in the assessment of the application.
  • Applicants may also apply with a valid GATE score (GATE 2017 or later). Applicants who appear for GATE 2018 should upload/submit the admit card along with the online application, but submit the SCORE CARD before the interviews.
  • JRF (NET): Applicants who have qualified for award of JRF (NET) can also apply within the validity of JRF (NET), and upload/submit the relevant documents.

Selection Process

Candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria stated above and who cleared the Common Admission Test (CAT) held by the IIMs in either 2016 or 2017.

Alternatively, those who have valid GATE, GRE, GMAT and JRF (UGC/CSIR) examinations till 26 th February 2018 can also apply in the relevant area of specialization. Candidates who have already obtained a two-year PGDM from any of the IIMs with a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale are exempted from this requirement, and can apply directly through the prescribed Application Form. Such applicants are also eligible to get a waiver of the first year course work and can directly join the second year of the programme.

Short-listed candidates on the basis of their academic record and performance in the competitive examinations mentioned above will be called to Shillong for a personal interview for final selection in March 2018 and the successful candidates will receive offers by April 2018.

Admission to the programme is open to overseas candidates including NRIs and foreign nationals. Their admission will be based on GMAT/GRE scores which are valid till 26 th February 2018.


Reservation for eligible categories will be as per Government of India rules applicable for doctoral programme at the time of admission.

Duration of the Programme and Accommodation

Students are expected to complete the programme in four years. However, under special circumstances extension of one more year may be granted only after permission from the competent authority. No financial support will however be provided for the fifth year. Fellowship students spend their first two years for course work and the last two years for research and thesis preparation. FPM is a full-time residential programme.

Hostel facility is available for all the FPM students, however, family accommodation is not available

Financial Support

Candidates selected for the Fellowship Programme are given a financial support which covers their research requirements and modest living.

  • All students admitted to the programme are given fellowship and contingency allowance up to four years. Students are provided with a fellowship amount of Rupees 20,000 per month during 1st year; Rupees 25,000 per month for 2nd & 3rd Year and Rupees. 30,000 per month in the 4th year, subject to the clearance of Comprehensive Examination and submission of thesis proposal. Students are required to be in attendance on a full-time basis and devote all their time to course-work and research, and are also required to provide teaching and research assistance. Other financial support made available to students includes:
    • Startup grant (in year 1) of Rs.50,000 to meet expenses on purchasing hardware, software, etc.
    • Contingency grant (annual, in years 2-5) of Rs.50,000 to meet expenses on purchasing hardware, software, Data Collection, Books etc.
    • Hostel room charge waiver.
    • National Conference grants of up to Rs.20,000 each towards accepted papers for two conferences in a year (prior approval needed).
    • International Conference grants of up to Rs.1,50,000 each towards a first accepted paper, and up to Rs.75,000 each for subsequent conferences (prior approval needed).
  • Those who are exempted from first year course work and are admitted directly in the second year of the programme would be eligible to get fellowship amount only for three years.


The students has to pay the following expenses:

  • Caution Deposit (refundable): Rs.10,000/-*
  • Mess Charges: As per actuals.

* This is a onetime fees payable during the time of Registration.

How to Apply

Candidates, who use their scores of other examinations such as GATE, GRE, GMAT, and JRF of UGC/CSIR are required to download the IIM Shillong FPM Application Form by clicking on the link provided below.

A candidate is eligible to submit applications to a maximum of two areas. The process of filing application is to be done in two parts:

1. The application form (available for download from the link below) should be filled up and submitted online. The form should be opened using Acrobat Reader only. (Click Here to download Adobe Reader. No photograph needs to be attached on the online submitted form.

Instructions for filling up the Application Form:
A.Download and Save the Online Form in your Desktop/Laptop.
B.Open the Form using Adobe Acrobat 9 and above.
C.Fill in the Details in the form as required
D.Ignore any Submit button in the form.
E.Provide your First name initial and surname only in the Signature section.[Eg: A.Kumar] 
F.Click on File --- Save As --  or Use Press the Save As Button (Save the file with your Name)
G.Send the File as an attachment to

The candidates are requested to be careful while filling in the form and to check the same before submitting it. In case any candidate submits the form more than once, the first such submission will only be considered.

2.The candidates should take a print of the online form before submitting the same. If the candidate is applying for two areas, two copies must be printed. The printed copy (ies) of the online application form, one for each area, with a recent photograph pasted and with all supporting documents (including self-attested copies of mark sheet and certificates of all public examinations starting from 10th, experience certificate, relevant score card, age proof, etc.) attached separately with each form which may be sent together in one envelop. Completed application forms along with a Demand Draft of Rs.1000/- (application fee is not applicable to SC/ST candidates) drawn in favor of RGIIM, Shillong payable at Shillong should be sent to the following address.

Candidates who have applied in the last two years, but did not get admission offer letter need not apply again.
