Biography

If talent is everywhere, why do organisations struggle to find the right people? This question has shaped my academic journey and continues to guide my research, teaching and industry engagement.

I pursued my MPhil and PhD at the School of Management and Labour Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. My research in Economic Analysis of Human Resource Decision Making examined labour markets, skill gaps, employability and the relationship between human potential and organisational opportunity. My academic journey took me through TISS and the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad, before I joined IIM Shillong in 2019, where I currently serve as Associate Professor.

My research lies at the intersection of Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour and Personnel Economics, focusing on AI in recruitment, HR analytics, talent development, workforce transformation, leadership and entrepreneurship in India.

I believe management is best understood through people and their stories. My teaching spans HRM, Organisational Behaviour, Leadership, HR Analytics and Human Capital Management, alongside distinctive courses such as Leadership Stories and Tales of Startup Failure. Through real-world cases, experiential learning and storytelling, I connect management concepts with organisational realities.

Beyond the classroom, I contribute to institutional leadership, admissions, executive education and organisational consulting, bridging academic insights and industry challenges.

My enduring pursuit is to understand how people and organisations can realise their full potential.

Work Experience

My professional journey spans academia, management education, institutional leadership and organisational consulting. Beginning at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, and subsequently at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad, I joined IIM Shillong in 2019, where I currently serve as Associate Professor. My work connects research on Personnel Economics, Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour with the practical challenges of managing people and organisations. Beyond teaching and research, I have led institutional initiatives in admissions, alumni relations and executive education, and collaborated with organisations on HR strategy, organisational restructuring, workforce development and leadership. I particularly value translating academic insights into actionable organisational solutions.

Consulting & Applied Research

60+ Consulting Assignments | 15 years

My consulting journey began in 2011 with strategic planning for MESCO, a Mumbai non-profit, and CSR support for the Shipping Corporation of India. My early research took me to workers at the edges of the economy, from home-based garment workers in North India to the unorganised workforce of Navi Mumbai. I also studied non-standard employment for UNI Global Union and family health innovation in Bihar with Northwestern University and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Over time, my work moved closer to the heart of organisations. I designed HR policies and manpower plans for Bharat Dynamics and Chenna Valley Power Project, conducted an HR audit for Power Finance Corporation, benchmarked compensation for APMDC, and contributed to the service-oriented transformation of the Telangana State Police Academy, Dr Reddy foundation, AMTRON.

Today, much of my work is rooted in Northeast India. I have led restructuring at Assam Industrial Development Corporation, supported business transformation at Assam Inland Waterways Corporation, assessed eight airports for the Airports Authority of India, developed plans for power and mining value chains in Nagaland for SIDBI, and strengthened Farmer Producer Organisations under IFAD.

Management Development Programmes

20,000+ Participant Hours | 25+ Organisations

Organisations depend on teams that work well together and on leaders who turn strategy into results. My programmes and sessions are designed to build exactly these capabilities.

My work with managers covers team dynamics, communication, collaboration, decision-making, strategic thinking, people management and leadership development. Every programme follows an experiential, learning-by-doing approach. Participants work through realistic challenges and then use structured reflection to understand how they lead, how they influence others, and how they can become more effective. The result is cohesive teams, stronger leaders, and managers ready to help their people perform at their best.

25+ Commissioned Reports

Much of my research has taken shape as reports commissioned by the organisations that needed answers. It began in 2011 with a strategic plan for MESCO and a series of CSR reports for the Shipping Corporation of India. Soon I was writing about the changing world of work: non-standard employment for UNI Global Union, home-based garment workers for INDITEX, Navi Mumbai’s unorganised sector for CIDCO, and urban youth for UN-Habitat.

My reports then turned to institutions. I co-authored HR policy and manpower planning reports for Bharat Dynamics and Chenab Valley Power Project, an HR audit for Power Finance Corporation, a compensation benchmarking study for APMDC, and a blueprint for reinventing the Telangana State Police Academy. Along the way, I contributed to studies for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Tata Teleservices, Maharashtra Fire Services and Dr. Reddy’s Foundation.

Each report began with a question and ended with usable evidence.
