Dr. Sanjay Kumar is an Assistant Professor in the Operations Management & Quantitative Techniques area at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong). Prior to joining IIM Shillong, he served as an Assistant Statistical Officer in the District Economics and Statistics Office under the Planning Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, Fatehpur. His experience in the government statistical system has contributed to his academic and professional expertise in quantitative methods, statistical analysis, and operations management.
Dr. Kumar completed his Ph.D. in Statistics from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur during 2019–2025, under the supervision of Prof. Debasis Kundu and Prof. Sharmishtha Mitra. His doctoral thesis, titled “Robust Inference of Bivariate Distributions,” focuses on developing computationally and asymptotically efficient estimators for the parameters of bivariate lifetime models, with an emphasis on robust and efficient estimation techniques. He also holds a one-year Computer Diploma (O Level). He earned his Master’s degree in Statistics and Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Allahabad, Prayagraj. Beyond academics, Dr. Kumar enjoys swimming, playing badminton, watching biographical films, and travelling to new places.
His research interests broadly encompass Applied Probability and Statistics, Robust Statistical Inference, Distribution Theory, Reliability and Survival Analysis, and Computational Statistics. His research focuses on developing robust, efficient, and computationally tractable statistical methodologies for lifetime and reliability data. In particular, his work explores distribution theory, optimization, robust inference, computational statistics, data analytics, semiparametric bivariate lifetime models, and dependent competing risks, with an emphasis on addressing methodological challenges arising in real-world applications.
Dr. Kumar has published research articles in international journals and has presented his research at several national and international conferences. He received an International Travel Award to attend the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM 2023), held at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan. He has also received a Best Oral Presentation Award in recognition of his research contribution. Dr. Kumar has teaching and academic experience at IIT Kanpur, where he served as a Teaching Assistant for several courses in Statistics and Mathematics.
