MDP on “Cost Optimization” for Executives of CPSEs






















MDP on “Cost Optimization” was organized by IIM Shillong for Executives of CPSEs, sponsored by Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Government of India from 16th-20th September, 2019 in the Campus. Altogether 32 participants attended the training program.

The Program Director(s) of the MDP are Prof. Nalini Prava Tripathy- Dean Research and External Affairs along with Prof.Mousami Bhattacharya from IIM Shillong.

Various topics covered in the training session included Measuring Financial Performance of Companies for cost optimization, Managing Cost for Nurturing Productivity, Cost Control and Variance Analysis, Managing Cash and Inventory for Efficiency Management, Strategic Cost Optimization Methodology: Mergers and Acquisitions, Strategy for Cost Optimization, Enhanced Customer Satisfaction for Improving Cost Optimization, Block Chain etc

MDP on “General Management with emphasis on Leadership Competencies” was organized by IIM Shillong for Senior Executives of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd from 26th-31st August, 2019 in the Campus. Altogether 37 participants attended the training program.

The program was inaugurated by the Program Director(s) Prof. Keya Sengupta- Dean Academics and Prof Sharad Nath Bhattacharya from IIM Shillong who welcomed the participants to the Institute and brief them on the module and topics of training.

The 6 days training program was facilitated by in house faculty. The participants from different regions of the country and from varied back ground and functions brought about different and unique perspective to the topics discussed. As part of the sessions, the participants were also taken for an excursion to the greens to gain a sustainability perspective. During the feedback, the participants have shared that the sessions on negotiation skills, emotional intelligence, ethics and values in leadership, inner engineering of self are good takeaways from the training program.

FIT INDIA MOVEMENT Campaign Launch live screening at IIM Shillong




















On the occasion of the National Sports Day, Students of IIM Shillong organised a ‘Fitness walk’ at 07:30am on 29th August’19 to beat the morning blues where the students had a stretching session and covered 3.5 kms in a morning run. IIM Shillong fraternity witnessed the Live telecast from Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi during the nation-wide ‘Fit India Movement’ Launch Campaign. The National Sports Day is also the birth anniversary of renowned hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. The Sports committee of IIM Shillong prepared the Institute’s Fitness Plan that includes, sports, exercise and physical activities for the whole year. The plan also includes to adhere with 10000 steps by all and should make it in his/her daily routine.

The live telecast of the event screened from the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, was brought to IIM Shillong by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Department of Sports. The screening had an enthusiastic participation from the Director Prof. D.P. Goyal, faculty members, supporting staff and the students. The screening covered a colorful presentation of Indian martial arts, indigenous sports like kho-kho, stapu, kabbadi, among others, and classical dance forms, all of which require, and help maintain a great level of fitness. In his address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized on the importance of physical activity in the technologically driven world.

IIM Shillong has always focused on sports and physical activities as a part of holistic development of the student life. The ‘Fit India Movement’ and the events organized in line have further bolstered the initiative towards a fit and salubrious life for the students.

MDP on “General Management and Leadership” for members of VMA


















MDP on “General Management and Leadership” was organized by IIM Shillong for members of Vidarbha Management Association, Nagpur from 07th-09th August, 2019 in the Campus. Altogether 21 participants attended the training program.

The program was inaugurated by Prof Sanjeeb Kakoty (Chairman(I/C ) MDP and Consultancy) who welcomed the participants and other dignitaries followed by brief about the program by Program Director(s) of the MDP Prof. Rohit Joshi along with Prof. Sanjita Jaipuria.

The 3 days training program was facilitated by in house faculty. The methodology includes Case studies, Classroom Lectures and Management Games facilitated by resource faculty.

The participants are from various organization, company, some of them are entrepreneurs and from such varied back ground and diverse domain and business that it provided a rich space for inter peer learning and interaction during the training program.

The program was inaugurated by Prof Harsh Vardhan Samalia (Chairman-MDP and Consultancy) who welcomed the participants and other dignitaries followed by address by Prof. Keya Sengupta- Dean Academics .The Program Director(s) of the MDP is Prof Keya Sengupta along with Prof Basav Roychoudhury from IIM Shillong.

The 6 days training program was facilitated by in house faculty. The methodology includes Case studies, Classroom Lectures and Management Games facilitated by resource faculty. The participants from different regions of the country and from varied back ground and functions added diversity as well as encouraged inter peer learning and interaction during the training program. Being amidst the hills of Shillong, the participants were also taken for an excursion to the greens to gain a sustainability perspective.

On the 27th July 2019 being the Death Anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam , the Institute had organized a Candle Light Homage which is open to the Public. The participants also took part in this solemn occasion by lighting candles and paid their respect and tribute to Dr Kalam.

Smart Village - Prof. Solomon Darwin Professor at Haas School of Business, University of California

American professor of business and the Executive Director of the Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, also known as the visionary leader of the Smart Village Movement and for developing "smart village frameworks" for rural villages with support of state and local governments in India and UC Berkeley, Prof. Solomon Darwin recently graced IIM Shillong in a visit for an interaction with Director Prof. D.P. Goyal, faculty members and students.

Accompanied by a group of students under his leadership with the aim towards achieving the Smart Village Movement in Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India, Prof. Darwin addressed the students of IIM Shillong through an explicit and engaging presentation on “Innovation & The Smart Village Movement.”

“Global problems call for a human response. These problems demand solutions to stimulate human creativity, to create opportunities thereby expanding markets, for which collaboration is required. Here is where open innovation can help build ecosystems,” remarked Prof. Darwin. Introducing the audience to the current global problems, Prof. Darwin stressed on Poverty, Inequality, Urbanization and disparities in opportunities of rural communities or villages as the key concerns.

According to him, “A smart village is a community empowered by digital technologies and open innovation platforms to access global markets which can help build a sense of community building through creation of an ecosystem, where helping foster the idea of branding and business modeling is made possible through such platforms.” He further stressed, “There are two types of Leadership that can make things happen. Executors with implementation capabilities and Transformers with dynamic capabilities.”

Prof. Darwin ended his address with an appealing video on Mori Village of Andhra Pradesh, acknowledged as India’s first ever smart village brought to shape through Berkeley’s direct intervention under his leadership.

Congratulating Prof Darwin on his valuable initiative and thanking UC, Berkeley and the Govt. of Meghalaya for showing keen interest in collaborating with IIM Shillong, Director of IIM Shillong Prof D.P. Goyal expressed his desire to further the engagement through a comprehensive memorandum of understanding/association. “I am sure that many of our talent pool present here are not only excited, but will forge a keen desire to associate, learn and implement the innovative idea for the benefit of those on the ground that need such an intervention and assistance,” he said.

It may be mentioned that Shri. Sampath Kumar, IAS and Commissioner & Secretary to the Chief Minister, Govt. of Meghalaya who was also present during the event, similarly encouraged the participants of IIM Shillong to join the internship opportunity under the state’s smart village movement initiative and be an active resource pool in bringing about much desired transformation. IIM Shillong welcomes Post Graduate Program Batch and Doctoral Program Batch of 2019

IIM Shillong held its 12th inauguration ceremony to welcome the new batch who will hold the baton for the upcoming two years. The ceremony was graced by two big names in the corporate world, Mr. DD Purkayastha, CEO and MD, ABP Group as Chief Guest and Mr. Ajeya Bandyopadhyay, Partner, KPMG Advisory Services as Guest of Honour.

The ceremony began with an invocation by Prof Rohit Joshi and the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries.

Admissions Chair Prof. Sharad Nath Bhattacharya and PGP Chairperson, Prof. Basav Roychoudhury congratulated the new batch for their latest achievement in being admitted as participants, and shed some light on how the Institute will be instrumental in shaping their future. Special focus was given on the sustainability program offered by the Institute. "Go through the foundation program which is focused on sustainability, and after the program culminates, you will be able to frame your own definition of what sustainability means to you", said Prof. Roychoudhury.

Prof. DP Goyal, Director, IIM Shillong, commented “We need to shape all these raw diamonds into polished diamonds which will shine and become global managers. Focus of the future managers is not just on pay packages but the value that they will be able to provide to their employers. The goal is not to just become global managers, but to serve the society. You will also need to take time out and experience the life in Northeast and all that it has to offer in terms of learning.” He emphasised the need for the Study Abroad Program as a way to shape the students into global managers while maintaining Indian values and ethos.

Mr Ajeya Bandyopadhyay while addressing the students said that the consulting world has evolved and the big firms feel the need to partner with the smaller boutique firms to avail their specialised skillset to serve the clients. The focus has shifted from just advisory to implementation. He remarked, “The key facets to succeed in an advisory role are: Agility, being flexible, curious, having the ability to upskill or reskill.”

The Chief Guest of the occasion Mr. DD Purkayastha, graced the occasion by giving his insights into the media industry and how ABP news has over the years become one of the best published news portals. The students had much to gain from his two decades of experience of working in the corporate media industry. Taking questions from students ranging from ethical news reporting to innovative business ideation by the fourth pillar of democracy, Mr. Purkayastha provided the new inductees with food for thought with élan. The interest generated amidst applause during Mr. Purkayastha’s talk revolved around internal business standards set by ABP ranging from innovation to collaboration, and strategic manoeuvring of trust, confidence and conviction in purpose to achieve respective goals from time to time.

The new batch of students will commence their foundation course on sustainable development considered as IIM Shillong’s innovative academic approach in the coming week on their quest to become holistic, environment focused managers of the 21st century.

IIM Shillong Organizes a Tree Plantation Drive in the New Campus

In line with the institute’s continued commitment towards Sustainability, the faculty and participants of IIM Shillong organised a tree plantation drive at the institute’s new campus today.

In collaboration with the Ecobiz Club of the institute, Director Prof. D.P. Goyal, the faculty that included Prof. Basav Roychoudhury, Prof. Rohit Joshi, Prof. Neelam Rani, Prof. Mousumi Bhattacharya and Prof. Sanjoy Mukherjee along with students and staff actively came forward to plant saplings. The drive is a small initiative to make the planet more liveable, not only for the present, but for future generations as well.

The plantation drive is one among the many initiatives to make the planet more liveable focusing on aspects related to environment as well as human life.

IIM Shillong organizes 3-Day Yoga Workshop to Commemorate International Yoga Day

On the occasion of the 5th International Yoga Day, IIM Shillong is organizing a 3-day workshop titled “Yoga for All” from 21st – 23rd June, 2019. The Instructor for this workshop, Sagarika Dutta Roy, was trained at Patanjali Yogagram, under Patanjali Yog Samiti, Haridwar.

Prof. D. P. Goyal, Director, IIM Shillong felicitated the Instructor, and actively participated in the inaugural Yoga learning session at 5.30 am in the Institute which involved students, faculty and staff. Prof. Sanjita Jaipuria and Prof. Atul Mehta, the faculty members of the institute coordinated the workshop.

Sagarika Dutta Roy, during the inaugural session emphasized on the importance of Yoga in day-to-day life and urged every participant to remain in practice beyond the workshop to derive full benefits in the long run.

IIM Shillong has, over the years, disseminated the practice of yoga to the attendees through its workshops. Each year, it ensures to make yoga more enjoyable and entertaining while keeping its essence intact.
