Nurturing Minds

During the course of the academic year 2015-16, the students of IIM Shillong kick started a unique teaching initiative called 'Nurturing Minds' in memory of Bharat Ratna Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The objective of the initiative, which took off on 17 th October 2015, is to connect with the local community and take a step towards Dr. Kalam's vision of 'Education for All'.

The first edition of the programme stretched over a 4-week period, during which a pool of thirty class eight students from local schools, namely H. Elias, Presbyterian and Dinet Manik School, were taught mathematics by the students of the Institute. Two hour sessions were held every weekend during which the student volunteers of IIM Shillong used innovative teaching aids and utilized the infrastructural facilities of the institute to make the sessions informative and fun. The focus till date remains on helping the enrolled students develop an interest in mathematics and form a strong base which could be built upon in the subsequent years.

By the next few years the volunteers plan to scale up the programme, by including other subjects in the course pedagogy and involving students of classes 7 to 9. This initiative exemplifies the emphasis IIM Shillong places on producing good human beings and aiding in holistic development, particularly of those from under privileged and economically backward families in society.
